On June 24, 2021, the Surfside Condo building in Surfside Florida collapsed, killing 98 people and causing about 1 billion dollars in damages.

The collapse began when the group floor parking area and pool deck caved in. Design failures and shoddy construction caused a domino-effect which then resulted in the destruction of the building.

Judge Michael Hanzman was considering whether to have a trial to understand what really happened and reach a settlement. In order to avoid a long process, he worked to finish the trial faster, so the people whose family members died wouldn’t have to lengthen their trauma. “These victims and families would have had to suffer through that and endure this trauma over and over and over again,” said Hanzman.

The tragedy in Surfside spurred action from the victims, families, and condo owners. In October, a group of engineers and architects said the state of Florida should consider requiring high-rise buildings near the coast to do safety checks every 20 years. Then, in December, a Florida grand jury issued a long list of recommendations aimed at stopping another collapse, including earlier and more frequent inspections and better waterproofing.

“This is one of the most complex building failure investigations ever undertaken,” said Judith Mitrani-Reiser, co-leader of the investigation.

Seven months after the collapse, temporary donations were added to areas in the underground garage of Champlain Towers South’s sister tower, Champlain Towers North, in what the building’s condo board called an abundance of caution. The condo was built in 1981 and has basically the same design as the Champlain Towers South.

The collapse has gone through lots of process including trials, rebuilding, and people being injured and lives being taken. Now that there are more security measures, we hope it won’t happen again in the future.
