Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico’s outgoing president, and Claudia Sheinbaum, a candidate, made history as they fought together for Sheinbaum to succeed Obrador in the presidential election.

If successful, Sheinbaum will be the first Mexican woman president and make history for women’s rights.

If she wins, Sheinbaum will be the first president from Mexico’s small Jewish community that is 60 years old if she gets chosen to be president. She has been supported by Obrador, who has campaigned for her in speeches.

Her position will be a victory for feminism. “Mexico is no longer written with the M of machismo,” she said. “But rather M for mother, for mujer,” Sheinbaum said.

While a student at the Autonomous University of Mexico, Sheinbaum was against a plan to raise fees at the public institution. She also spent 4 years at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on her way to earning a doctorate in energy engineering. When López Obrador became the mayor of Mexico City in 2000, he made her secretary of environment for the capital.

She became the mayor of Mexico City after he became president 3 years later. The election to become the next president was in 6 months. She worked hard to become the next president. President López Obrador had selected Sheinbaum to become the next President of Mexico.
