One famous Tik-Tok star, Remi Bader, recently shared her story about body shaming at a ranch. When she wanted to ride a horse at 240 pounds, she was immediately denied. What made matters worse was that the employee who declined her chose to insult her using a TikTok video, taunting that obese people are not welcome at the ranch.

She decided to be vulnerable and share her thoughts with people around the world. “The way I was spoken [to] and laughed at … and the way I was treated overall… [was] very clear that they did not want me there because of my weight, and that’s very disappointing,” she said.

Obese people worldwide are constantly being fat-shamed by others, and criticism and patronization they receive can negatively impact their mental and physical health.

CDC has reported that “41.9% of American adults” and “1 in 5 Americans aged 2 to 19 [are] classified as obese.” The number of obese people has continued to climb higher over the years.

Unfortunately, an incline in the number of obese people comes with an increase in the likelihood of finding instances of body shaming. The hate and negative actions spread by others are extremely detrimental to the victims’ physical and mental health.

When it comes to body shaming and health, while some may have good intentions to help the obese lose weight, their negative comments can potentially backfire. Many obese people cannot handle the pressure and negative energy around them, and in turn, they can end up in a worse mental state than where they started with lower self-esteem, less physical involvement, and eating disorders.

Studies have stated that people who have experienced body shaming are more unlikely to deter themselves from doing exercise for fear of becoming discriminated against. Unfortunately for Bader, her experience at the ranch will likely affect her future decisions regarding physical activities.

Denouncing the obese continues to be a serious problem, affecting people of all ages. It’s time for the people around the globe to come together and change body negativity to body positivity.
