On June 18th, during the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City, North Carolina, the Sensation Crew caught a massive marlin. This large catch led the crew to disqualification.
The Sensation Crew caught a 600-pound blue marlin and later explained how the marlin got disqualified. The disqualification was all because of mutilation on the blue marlin’s tail and underside. The weight master, a neutral official, noticed that the marks looked like shark bites and disqualified the marlin.
The weight master then said, “This rule is there to protect the fish, so nobody gets an advantage. When you fight and land this fish, you have fought 100% of the fish. At no time during the fight of the fish, did something happen that would give you an advantage over the next guy?” The weight master explained these rules that have been intact and lasted over the past 65 years.
Research says, “This amazing pelagic species is capable of impressive leaps (often multiple leaps in quick succession) and high-speed dives when hooked, which is why blue marlin are among the toughest fish to catch and are often pursued by offshore saltwater big game anglers worldwide.”
If they had won, McCoy himself would have received 10 percent of the $3.5 million, a total he described as “life-changing.” He says, “The money would have been put aside for his kids, I feel like we earned it.” In the end, the blue marlin was disqualified, but that doesn’t mean that the epic six-hour fight with the 600-pound marlin will go to waste.
