The rapid increase of dishonest and false scientific papers is affecting the science world drastically. With how fast the constant mass production of these wrongful articles happens, it has somewhat halted much of the world’s innovative advancement. It has also made it harder on the workers since now they have more work put out for them, having to figure out the credibility of most sources, something they didn’t have to do before, and definitely something that takes up a lot of time.
if not full-on fake articles, to the public in massive industrial sizes. The name for this is “paper mills”. Paper mills are fraudulent organizations that massproduce low-quality and sometimes false science articles, then sell off authorship. Some examples of organizations that are found to have fraudulent papers include “According to Science (AAAS)” has a rapidly increasing number of false papers and “OMICS” having faced a lawsuit by the US Federal Trade Commission in 2016 for deceptive publishing processes. This causes uncertainty in many fields, with people blindly trusting such information just to find out at the critical moment that what they have been so diligently studying had been untrue this whole time. For example, some students when applying to go into research labs need to write an essay to get in, and if these false information articles become a problem, some kids could potentially end up writing an entire essay just to find out at the sense everything they wrote about was fake or wildly off. Such scenarios make it increasingly harder for people, such as students applying for researcher positions, when such spots are limited and such information is questionable.
A major part of growth for all people is the idea of learning from mistakes. For some people, like scientists, these mistakes don’t have to be ones they took themselves, but ones others took and put online to help others. Scientists are constantly learning, and a great way to learn is from others’ mistakes, so you can educate yourself and know what not to do, and maybe even when to do. Science has greatly improved in recent centuries, and this is because scientists have access to credible sources to read about past achievements of past scientists and what stumps they had hit in their journey, so new scientists won’t have to hit. This new predicament of organizations creating such false articles has pushed back the advancements of science since the newer upcoming scientists now have to face more challenges, such as having to differentiate between true and false articles, when back then the only question on their plate was how the lab or experiment worked.
The speed at which such works are being spread is increasing dramatically. According to The New York Times statistical analysis, it shows that the number of fake journals and articles being mass published by paper mills is doubling every year and a half and that the number of estimated mill products may be 100 times greater than the mass they have already identified. Along with that incorrect manuscripts are often provided to such paper mills by corrupted scientists hoping to pay for silence among the workers. Paper mills then often offers bribes to corrupt editors to ensure papers get published with no problems. This shows how easily false news can get to the public.
To get the fastest and easiest publishing time, many corrupted individuals would plagiarize others’ works and use AI (artificial intelligence) to change up some words to make the work pass as one’s own. This shows how incredibly easy it is to just create false science-based articles, throwing off many, and because of this, many can’t help but wonder if this false way of writing will continue to spread to even different subjects, causing even more chaos among the people.
