On July 20, Eleanor Patterson competed in the women’s high jump at the Word Athletics Championship and became the first Australian to win a gold medal.
The 26-year-old placed first after jumping 2.02m for the first time. “I knew I could clear that height and to do that on the first attempt was amazing,” Patterson said.
The competition was fierce, and many jumpers cleared the bar on their first try. Patterson was very close to exiting the game after she missed two 1.98 meter jumps. She pulled through by jumping the 2.00m the second try. Only Paterson and Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh remained to jump the 2.02m. Paterson cleared it on the first try, while it took Mahuchikh two tries. Both failed to clear the 2.04m jump, so Patterson went home with the gold for Australia.
“I’m actually, honestly in disbelief,” Patterson said after the competition. “It’s crazy to think, I’m going to be shaking my head in disbelief for the whole week, month, year, who knows?”
