A viral trend from TikTok has struck dermatologists a big blow. Calamine lotion is being smeared on faces, those doing it claiming that it dries oily skin, repairs acne scars, and helps makeup last much longer. However, dermatologists say otherwise.
The lotion is meant for soothing rashes and other skin conditions that cause itching. Which means using it as a makeup primer is not advised by doctors. “It just doesn’t make sense to use calamine lotion and risk drying out the skin and damaging the skin barrier,” said dermatologist Azadeh Shirazi at an interview with the Washington Post.
Shirazi attempted to convince people on TikTok to stop using calamine lotion, she used her account on the app to prove the trend false. Shirazi said that the lotion will have a series of negative long term effects such as “severe irritation and worsening of scars,” if used frequently.
For makeup professionals, primer is an absolute necessity for putting on makeup. Right now, thousands of TikTokers are swearing by using Calamine to make their make up go on more smoothly and stick better. However, Kourtney Hammett, a makeup artist advised the public that calamine lotion should not be used as a primer. “You should be using makeup that is suitable for your skin type.”
“Much like anything else related to skin care, the potential risks depend on your skin type so it’s best to always check with your dermatologist first,” advised Shirazi. It’s not just the effect calamine lotion has on your skin, those who have skin conditions such as lupus can no longer buy the lotion because it is sold out in many different stores. This is no doubt the cause of the calamine lotion trend.
