Today was the day, the day that we would have to compete to see who would qualify for the school spelling bee. The teacher said, “Anyone who would like to compete in the spelling bee please come to the whiteboard.” 14 of us nervously walked up to the whiteboard. We were lined up one by one, ready for our word.
In the 1st round, 6 people were eliminated. With 8 people left, the 2nd round came. 3 were eliminated. Then there were 5. It took 2 rounds to get 1 eliminated but soon there were 3. In that round, the person who was eliminated had spelled loneliness wrong. He had spelled, L-O-N-E-L-E-N-E-S-S. Then there were 2. I remember hearing the word devious and feeling terrified.
I didn’t know how to spell that word! But I still did it. Then there was the tie breaker. The other competitor was given the word classify, but he spelled it wrong. I remember hearing the teacher say, “And the winner is Nikila!” It was one of the happiest days of my life.
