The Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade will have long-lasting and deeply personal effects on many people. Crowds gathered outside the building in Washington D.C. on the day awaiting results, and after discovering the reversal, some immediately burst into tears, while others cheered.

Reactions to the decision have been swift. Following the decision, many people have gathered at the Supreme Court and all around the country protesting the overturn. On social media, those devastated by the news reported having ghost period cramps, nausea, and headaches.

Polls that ask the American public about the outcome show that most disapprove of the ruling, including two-thirds of women. By more than a 20-point margin, Americans are calling it a step backward. And women, by more than three to one, think the decision will make women’s lives worse.

Across all demographics, younger people tend to disapprove. Most moderates disapprove, along with nine in 10 liberals. Two-thirds of Hispanic Americans, three-fourths of African-Americans, and just over half of white Americans disapprove.

Approval rates are high among Republicans and those who identify as conservatives. 79 percent of them report feeling hopeful, while 70 percent of them report feeling happy or relieved. Those who condemn the reversal report feeling upset, angry, and scared, with 78 percent, 72 percent, and 62 percent, respectively.

In the states, most want abortion to be at least legal and few want it to be illegal in all cases. Most Republicans want abortion in their state to be legal in at least some circumstances. A third of Democrats want it to be legal in most, but not all cases.

A majority support the congressional passage of a federal law to make abortion legal nationwide. It’s about the same percentage as those who disapprove of the overturning of Roe.
