Terrorist attack on synagogue in Manchester
On Thursday, October 3rd, 35-year-old Jihad al-Shamie attacked the synagogue in Manchester, England. A total of two people have died, and three have been hospitalized since. The attack took place on Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar. Al-Shamie rammed his car into the people outside the synagogue in Manchester, England, and then went on a stabbing spree while wearing a fake explosive vest. He was then struck by the police while trying to enter the building.
Politicians from every party and religious figures have been expressing condolences to Jewish communities. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to do everything within his power to safeguard Jewish individuals, as he stated that Britain needs to overcome antisemitic hatred.
The Prime Minister stated that animosity towards Jews is increasing, and Britain needs to take steps to stop it. The Jewish Leadership Council and the Board of Deputies of British Jews also said, “We are heartbroken by the passing of these two heroes from our Jewish community, and our thoughts are with their families, those who are hurt and being treated with care, and everyone impacted by this antisemitic act of fear.”
The sentiment was shared by Imam Qari Asim, co-chair of the British Muslim Network, who stated that the events in Manchester were not acceptable in our society and any expression of antisemitism is completely intolerable. Manchester City Council Leader Bev Craig said that Manchester supports our Jewish community during this bleakest of times and will unite as a town. London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan argued that individuals should have the freedom to move around and exercise their beliefs with the assurance of their safety.
The Metropolitan Police will enhance visible policing in and near synagogues in London. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch stated to the BBC that it was an outrageous assault on the Jewish community during their most sacred day, describing it as despicable and repulsive. The Prime Minister states that additional police will be stationed outside religious sites across England.
