Tennis Coach Gordon Ernst has pleaded guilty to receiving bribes to allow kids to get into colleges. He was sentenced on Friday to two whole years in custody.
In March of 2019, Mr. Gordon Ernst was arrested for taking bribes to help twelve different students to get onto the tennis team for Georgetown. According to documents, some athletes didn’t even play tennis competitively. He was sent to jail after admitting to his crimes. The federal investigation, Operation Varsity Blues left Mr. Ernst sentenced up to 4 years in prison, with 3 years of supervised release, and a forfeiture of $3,435,053, representing the harshest punishment so far for any defendant in a Varisty Blues Case.
There are other people that do this scandal as well. William Singer, the center of college admissions, gave the bribe payments to Mr Ernst. He is also a defendant in Operation Varsity Blues and will have his hearing this September.
According to Rachel S. Rollings, the U.S. attorney, Mr. Ernst makes the most out of these cheating admission systems. “Mr. Ernst was one of the most prolific participants in cheating the college admissions system, he put nearly $3.5 million in bribes directly into his pocket and sold close to two dozen slots at Georgetown to the highest bidder.”
