A tennis coach for Georgetown University accepted bribes from students who were seeking to gain admission.

Gordon Ernst, 54, was sentenced to 30 months in prison, the harshest punishment issued by the federal investigation known as Operation Varsity Blues. They are dedicated to unearthing illegal bribes by wealthy parents to have their children admitted to elite colleges.

Mr. Ernst was arrested in March of 2019 along with more than four dozen other coaches, parents, and testing center officials. Mr. Ernst allowed at least a dozen students onto the Georgetown tennis team between 2012-2018 because he received bribes. According to court documents, some of these students didn’t even play tennis competitively. More than 50 other people were charged for involvement with the scandal. Not only this, but Mr. Ernst also didn’t report the income from the bribes on his income tax returns.

Mr. Ernst was working alongside William Singer, preferably Rick, a college counselor, who also offered wealthy families access to the nation’s top universities. Rick was reportedly the ringleader of the college admission scandal. Although Mr. Singer hasn’t been sentenced yet, he will be in September.
