Gordon Ernst, a former tennis coach for Georgetown University, was sentenced to two years in prison. The sentencing was part of an overarching investigation called “Operation Varsity Blues”, in which coaches have been found guilty for accepting bribes from parents to get their children into top-tier universities.
In March of 2019, Ernst pleaded guilty to accepting bribes, admitting at least 12 students as recruits into the tennis team. According to The New York Times, court documents say that some of these students did not even play tennis competitively.
Ernst was part of a scandal that may have been led by William Singer. Singer gave wealthy families an easier way to get their children into the university, which was by paying the university more money. Mr. Singer has not been sentenced yet, but he might be in his hearing, scheduled for September.
