Rising singer, and songwriter Conan Gray released a new album called Superache on Friday, June 24. This new set of songs perfectly captures the essence of the emotional rollercoasters of heartbreak and teen angst. The album contains songs with the titles “Yours” and “Memories” to “Disaster” and “The Exit”, putting listeners through grief, of love, and everything in between.

At 23, Gray has been writing songs for 11 years; he wrote his first song “Those Days” when he was only 12 years old. The topic of the song is quite different from the ones he writes today, as the song is about the tiny town he lived in between the ages of 3 to 7: Rockdale, Texas.

Gray, born to a Japanese mother and white father, lived in California before age three, then moved around a while before settling down in Texas after his parent’s divorce. Being one of the only Asian kids at his school and in his area, he said some of his childhood was “brutal”. As an escape, Gray had a YouTube channel, where he posted videos online containing facts about his life or covers for songs that he played on his guitar.

While he did gain a few hundreds of thousands of subscribers on YouTube by the time he was in his senior year, his channel only really blew up in 2017, when he posted a music video for his single, Idle Town. The music video depicted him and his friends driving around their small town, which Gray says was filmed on a “tripod duct-taped to the back of my mom’s car.” When he found out that the song was a big hit, Gray dropped out of UCLA to pursue his dream of becoming a singer and songwriter.

In March of 2020, Gray released his first album “Kid Krow” right before the quarantine started, forcing him to cancel plans for the album’s tour. This album contained a lot of songs reminiscing about his childhood with songs like “Little League” and “The Story” and a few songs about breakups and love, however, the entire album had less of an undertone of grief and sadness than “Superache” and more of a sarcastic, angry feeling with songs like “Maniac” and “Checkmate”.

His gradual rise in popularity led up to his most recent album, which is predicted to be a huge hit. Gray has the potential to be the biggest star yet.
