On Friday night at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, American track star Sydney Mclaughlin broke her own 400m hurdles world record…again.

It was only last month when Mclaughlin broke the world record with a time of 51.14 seconds in the U.S. Championships. On Friday, she blazed a time of 50.68 seconds, claiming gold.

Mclaughlin’s magnificent performance marked her fourth time beating her own world record.

Two years ago in the U.S. Olympic Trials, she ran the 400m hurdles with an impressive time of 51.90 seconds.

Following the trials was the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she set yet another world record and won gold with 51.46 seconds.

She broke her record once more last month and finally on Friday. She is officially the first woman to beat the 400m hurdles race under 51 seconds.

“The time is absolutely amazing and the sport is getting faster and faster,” Mclaughlin said after the race, according to the World Athletics website. “Just figuring out what barriers can be broken. I only get faster from here.”

Behind Mclaughlin were Dutch runner Femke Bol and former world champion Dalilah Muhammad. She was ahead of Bol by 1.59 seconds, and Mclaughlin’s main rival, Muhammad, finished with 53.13 seconds.

“She was so far in front at the end, so I was always doubting if I really had a good race because it felt very good. Then I saw the time and I was like, ‘Wow.’ It is amazing to be a part of it and to come out second in such a race,” Bol said after the race.

Muhammad on the other hand, was not as pleased as Bol was.

“It’s great to get a medal but I came into these championships on the strength of having always gotten a medal at any championships, despite any injuries. But as a competitor, you always want more,” she said.

Sydney Mclaughlin awed everyone on Friday night with her extraordinary run. Even with the gold medal in her hands, she knows there is always room for improvement, and more records to break.
