Not long ago, Sydney McLaughlin was extremely challenged every time she stepped onto the starting blocks for the 400-meter hurdles event. She was struggling against runners such as Dalilah Muhammad. But now she is running at an entirely new level, running past all the other athletes she races against.
McLaughlin has beaten numerous world records and is an Olympic gold medalist. She broke her fourth record in two years on Friday night and obtained a time of 50.68 seconds, just in front of Dutch runner Femke Bol with 52.27 and ahead of Dalilah Muhammad, who had a time of 53.13. For McLaughlin, there is almost no competition from other runners. Her only concern now is beating the clock. At the U.S. championships 27 days earlier, she set a world record. Now, in the World Championships, she took off 0.73 seconds from her previous WR.
Sydney McLaughlin’s achievements may seem otherworldly, but she still sees room for improvement. She says that “I think we’re all figuring out that, yes, there are 10 barriers, but we can run them a lot faster than people think.… I still think that wasn’t even a super clean race.”
Defeating Muhammad and Bol is no small feat. They are both formidable runners, with Muhammad holding the world record before McLaughlin, and still being a great runner at 32 years—old for competing in professional sports. However, Muhammad suffered an injury and was hesitant about competing in the World Championships. She says, “I was kind of nervous, honestly, going into this meet, not knowing where my fitness level would be.” Femke Bol is 22 years old, and she won a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, just behind McLaughlin and Muhammad. She has the seventh fastest time in the history of running.
McLaughlin is a prodigious runner, and many fans of the sport of running want to see her in action again.
