On Saturday evening, December 28, 2024, extreme weather caused thousands of flights to be canceled in and out of the United States, due to a powerful clash of air masses and pressure systems, which severely affected holiday and air passengers. Flights were cancelled worldwide, affecting thousands of air passengers. Passengers on airplanes had to either rebook their flights, or wait a long time for their delayed flight. This caused feelings of stress and frustration. Also, the passengers on the airplanes wondered how their flight would go — would they make the trip safely? In addition, people whose flights were delayed experienced other frustrating things. According to”The New York Times”, “Passengers were denied any snacks or drinks while they waited.”
Such extreme weather was due to a powerful clash of air masses and pressure systems. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico moved northward, meeting cooler, drier air descending from the north. This creates cumulonimbus clouds, which cause thunder and lightning. As for pressure systems, the difference of pressure can cause strong winds, which fuel storms, tornadoes, hail, and flash floods.
For example, there was a tornado outbreak in the southern United States on December 28, 2024, particularly Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. It caused widespread damage to many other places. In addition, flash floods caused fatal injuries and pollution in water. This caused many deaths.
