Dangerous UK Storm Floris Causes Cancellations and Severe Damages

By: Allison C
Residents in the United Kingdom are facing a frightful Storm Floris going their way today. This is because of a powerful jet stream high in the atmosphere created a strong low-pressure system over the Atlantic.
Amber alerts have been sent out to citizens near or in Scotland. These notifications alert anyone about a severe weather going their way. It is dangerous to travel as there are heavy rains and strong winds. Flights, ferries, and railway trips have either been delayed or cancelled due to the hazardous conditions.
Storm Floris is expected to last until Tuesday morning, August 5th, at 6:00 AM. Weather warnings are also in place across Scotland, Ireland, North Wales, and the north of England.

What Are the Damages of the UK Storm Floris?

The Storm Floris has caused widespread cancellations and disruptions in parts of Europe. Household items are flying everywhere and no one can get a break from staying indoors.
The rail operator in Scotland has asked residents near the railroads to tie down gardening tools or trampolines. Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland’s route director, said: “Our teams have been working tirelessly to keep services moving where possible and to clear fallen trees and debris from the tracks.”
STV News, a Scottish weather reporter has stated that many campervans on the highway of A87 have been blown over by the powerful storm. Officers advised that anyone with a campervan should remain in parked sheltered areas until the wind speed has reduced.
Roads have also been closed because of flying debris and fallen trees. For now, travelling is suggested to be delayed until Tuesday afternoon.

Safety Precautions Issued by Authorities

The Met Office has released a page on how to stay safe and protect your property during the storm for these few days.
Some of these tips include:
– Fastening doors including garages to prevent water damage to your home and flying debris from coming inside.
– Parking vehicles in garages to stop your vehicle from getting damaged or flying away.
– Staying indoors while the storm is still in progress.
– Do not touch electrical or telephone cables after the storm that have either been hanging or damaged.
