On Thursday, June 16 in Boston’s TD Garden, the Golden State Warriors won their fourth NBA championship by beating the Celtics 103-90. This was mainly because of Steph Curry’s amazing performances in the games.
Steph Curry is considered one of the best three point shooters ever in the NBA. He averages nearly four three-pointers per game and has broken multiple records, including most three pointers in a season and most three pointers in a career. Over the past eight years, Curry vaulted from a player who kept on getting injured to a superstar of the Golden State dynasty.
It was no surprise when Steph won the Finals MVP (Most valuable player) in the 2022 NBA finals. He had averaged 31.2 points per game, the most out of his entire team. However, winning the Finals MVP has also brought a new chapter to his legacy.
Curry is a really talented player. At 6 foot 2, the NBA has never seen a player at his size dominating the league.
“You’ve never seen a guy his size dominate the league like this and just to put the weight of everything on his shoulders throughout a Finals series,” Golden State Andre Iguodala told reporters on Thursday. “We all saw what he was doing to them boys. Normally you get a guy that’s a center, like an Hakeem [Olajuwon]. Or Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, those guys are 6-7 and taller, and they can get to their spots and shoot over guys. But a guy his height who is vertically challenged, they would say, just — you saw it; we all saw it. It was just incredible. ”
Before the 2022 finals, many people used his lack of getting Finals MVP to minimize him. Steph was a two time MVP in the regular season, yet in the finals, his teammates were all outshining him. In 2015, his teammate Andre Iguodala won the Finals MVP. In 2017 and 2018, his former teammate Kevin Durant won the MVP.
“It all starts with Steph,” Draymond Green said at the beginning of the Finals. “When KD was here, our offense still started with Steph, and that’s the way it’s going to be.”
In 2019, when Durant left for Brooklyn, Steph was now responsible to lead a younger roster. And after two difficult years, the Warriors haven’t just won another championship, they have a young core that suits both Curry, Green, and Klay Thompson.
