Nick, a customer in Walgreens, looked everywhere to find some sqiushmallows. Every few days, he comes to buy Squishmallows ever since he found the first one. He spent $2,000 dollars on 400 Squishmallow in the past 2 years. A squishmallow is soft plushy and it can come in different sizes. Its design is an animal shape, with a big belly and cute face.

In a few more years, the price will go up from $5.99 to $36.99 because of its size. The sizes come in 2 to 24 inches. Fans over 18 bought more than Nick and kids buy even more. Popular toys like Lego, Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price have been the top brands, but in 2022, Squishmallow, replaced the top-selling toys in the U.S. and Canada.

This brand is like Hello Kitty and Pokémon. Sunny Cho was a designer at KellyToy, the Squishmallow company. Her boss told her to design a cute, stretchy, soft fabric animal plushy. The structure with all of the plushies are egg shape with a belly and face. [

The senior director of product design, Cho credits her experience as a plush designer after designing all the faces. The Squishmallow were usually called “squad” and sold in parks or amusement parks and pop shops.

James Zahn, editor in chief of the trade publication The Toy Book and senior editor at the Toy Insider said, “It took off in a way no one really expected, part of the initial appeal of Squishmallows was the fact that they were a little harder to get.”

Squishmallows are now available in Walmart, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Costco, Five Below, TJ Maxx, Hallmark, independent toy stores and more. All of this happened because of the pandemic, as people thought squishmallows were soothing and didn’t mind getting one while getting groceries.

People also collect them and display them. People who were done with surgeries were given some Squishmallows. People are now obsessed with the plushy and buying more than hundreds.

“We started really slow because we wanted to see how that resonated with our fan base,” Gerhard Runken, a designer said. “The last thing we want to do is oversaturate a market with products … that kill the core brand.”
