Two disappointing losses for Euro Cup 2025
Alexander Li
On Saturday, July 5, 2025 it was a disappointing game for England and Wales in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for women. Wales lost against Netherlands 3-0, and England lost against France 2-1.
It was Wales first appearance in the UEFA and it was tough, considering that Netherlands won the 2017 Euro Cup and was a Runner Up for the FIFA world cup.
Just before half-time, Vivianne Miedema from France scored a superb goal. Afterwards, Victoria Pelova and Esmee Brugts both scored two more goals ending with the score 3-0.
“Every game is a tough game,” says Angharad James, Wales captain. “We gave it our all. It wasn’t quite good enough, we know that and we’ll learn from that. But I couldn’t be prouder of this group. They mean everything to me, they always wear their hearts on their sleeves and they’ll do it again in the next game.” Even after a tough match, Wales remains positive and keeps on trying.
Meanwhile, in the game for England vs. France, Alessia Russo scored a goal on the 16 minute-mark. However Video Assistant Referee (VAR), determined that Beth Mead was in an offside position.
According to Orlando City, an offside position is where a player is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent. It also means that the player will be violated, and the goal will not count.
Next, France went on to attack. Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore both scored goals and for a moment, it seemed as though that the game would lead to a score of 2-0. But Keira Walsh from England managed to score a goal on the 87th minute mark, ending with a score of 2-1.
“It was disappointing, disappointing result. I think we finished the game strong but we don’t want to be in situations like that where we are finishing games like that,” said England captain, Alex Greenwood. “Of course not the ideal start but no tournament is won or lost after the first game. We have two massive games now that we must win.” she added. Just like Wales, they remain positive and keep trying.
Wales plays against France on July 9th at 8pm. England’s next match is against Netherlands on July 9th at 5pm. Who do you think will win?
