Yamashita Won, But Hull Seen
On August 3, Yamashita won her first golf tournament in Royal Porthcawl, Wales, but got less attention than Charley Hull. She was nearly moved to tears because not everyone is celebrating her wins, but Charley Hull’s second place.
Yamashita won the AIG Women’s Open, and it is her first win since she started. Charley was getting attention because of her comeback from 74th place, where she placed on day 1 of the tournament, to fourth on the second-to-last day of the tournament. Her placement from 74th to fourth to two strokes over the overall winner in second is a thrilling chase that leads the audience in suspense. This kind of “chase” narrative is more entertaining to the fans than the unflappable win from Yamashita.
Another reason is that she was in this professional sport longer than Yamashita, therefore knowing the fans more than her. Because of this, along with her activeness on social media, lead her to become more popular and well known to her fans. Although Yamashita won, she was in this sport a lot shorter and was a rookie, therefore not earning as much attention as the veteran Charley Hull.
One more reason why she may have gotten more attention than Yamashita is that she played even though she was injured. This made her comeback even more shocking, and with her good performance as well, caught of all the audiences. The cause of this misfortune was when she strained her back lifting a heavy box while also catching an illness along with that, and in total, messed her training schedule up for three weeks.
The injuries and illness, her chase from bottom to top, and also her popularity is what made her catch the attention of the audience over the first-time winner, Yamashita.
