On Sunday, in Porthcawl, Wales, Miyu Yamashita, a new, rising golfer, won her first major tournament. Though Miyu may have won the spotlight was stolen by tied second place, Charley Hull.
The Japanese golfer, Miyu Yamashita, played a wonderful game, winning her first major tournament at the AIG Women’s Open. Having scored 11-under-par or 277 strokes, just two shots over her opponents in second place, Charley Hull and Minami Katsu. Having such a great game, winning her first ever large-scale golf tournament, and scoring great every round, almost ensuring she would win from the beginning, her grand winning spotlight still ended up shared with her runner-up, Charley Hull.
Charley Hull pulled off an amazingplay this tournament. Being able to go from 74th place on the first day to eventually second place, just two swings off from 1st place. Charley had a marvelous play scoring 3-under- 69 in the final round, which included birdies that at one point of the game brought her so close to the win she was just one shot from the lead. This lead was quickly dropped when Charley scored back-to-back bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes on the final day. A bogeys is a score of one stroke over par on a hole. A par means that the standard number of strokes an expert golfer is expected to take to complete a hole. This fumble on Charley’s part cost her the massive lead she had on the others and the chance to win her first championship victory.
Charley Hull shot many amazing shots, including her birdie on No. 14, but to make this shot even crazier is the fact that she was previously sick and hurt, which then caused her to lose weight, leading her to believe she wouldn’t even make the cut. Charley Hull had a massive struggle recovering from the virus she caught, and to add to this, her back was injured from lifting boxes. Charley also at a previous game had collapsed because of this virus. At the Amundi Evian Championship, Charley Hull was forced to withdraw after collapsing twice during the first round of the tournament. Charley ended up also needing to receive medical attention, needing to use an IV drip, and getting carted off the course. Due to all of this, her training schedule was interfered with, and in the span of the three weeks she had to recover from her injuries and illness, she lost a total of 4kg of weight.
