Coco Gauff’s Redemption in the French Open
On June 7th, Coco Gauff won her first French Open in Paris, France. Back in the 2022 French Open, Coco Gauff reached the finals just to lose to Iga Swiatek. This was a huge disappointment for her so she promised herself that she would come back even stronger. That’s why this year in Paris, she beat Aryna Sabalenka and rose back to the top from a huge setback.
Not long after she won the final match, she took out a piece of paper from her backpack. On that piece of paper, she wrote, ‘I will win the French Open’ a ton of times, and when the day of the final match came, she did. Her inspiration came from Gabby Thomas, an Olympic sprinter. Gabby Thomas had done something similar and proceeded to win the 200m sprint in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
A reason why many think Coco Gauff won the French Open is because of her mental strength. She rose up from many setbacks such as losing her first set in Madrid and Rome. She showed her mental strength in Paris by winning the final match even when she lost the first set. Greg Rusedski, a former world number four stated, “Mentally there is nobody stronger in the women’s game.”
Coco Gauff has been improving her tennis skills and using her strong mental strengths which resulted in her winning the French Open. The 2025 French Open was a chance for Gauff to redeem herself from the loss in 2022 and she certainly has succeeded.
