Portugal wins the Nations League
On Sunday, June 8th, Portugal won the Nations League, a European soccer competition, against Spain. This game, which ended with a score of 5-3 in a penalty shootout, took place at the Allianz Arena in Germany.
Many people were excited about the final matchup: Portugal captain and legend Cristiano Ronaldo versus Spain’s teenage marvel Lamine Yamal. Spain jumped ahead through Martin Zubimendi in the 21st minute, but five minutes later, Portugal’s Nuno Mendes scored a goal to tie the game. Spain then got their second goal from Mikel Oyarzabal, taking a 2-1 lead into half-time. In the second half, Portugal regained the lead with Ronaldo’s goal, tying the game once again at 2-2.
With neither side scoring in extra time, the game moved on to the penalty shootout.
Portugal managed to score all five goals, while Spain’s Álvaro Morata was the only player to miss, crowning Portugal as the Nations League champion.
After the match, 40-year-old Ronaldo was crying as he explained how much the game had meant to him. This was the third time he had won with Portugal, following his Euro 2016 championship and the Nations League title in 2019.
