Para Sports at the Commonwealth Games
Para athletes will be competing in the 2026 Commonwealth Games hosted in Glasgow, Scotland, for medals in 10 sports programs and a total of 47 medal events.
There are 56 countries in the Commonwealth Games, and most of these countries were a part of the British Empire at one point. Some of the countries included are: Canada, Australia, India, South Africa, and New Zealand.
The Commonwealth Games happen every four years. The 2026 Commonwealth Games will start on July 26, will run until August 2, and will be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland. There will be about 3000 athletes participating.
There are going to be 10 sports programs, with 6 of the 10 events allowing disabled athletes to participate with 47 medal for said athletes. The 10 para sports are going to be: para athletics, basketball and wheelchair basketball, para swimming, para bowls, para track cycling, and para powerlifting. It will be the largest ever para sport medal event program.
The 2026 para sports in Commonwealth Games will also be the first time in the history of Commonwealth Games that para athletics will have athletes competing in jumping, throwing, and track. Additionally, the para cycling program’s size has doubled since 2022. There are also more basketball and wheelchair basketball teams as well.
Scottish paralympic and world champion cyclist Fin Graham, said “I’m absolutely delighted to see such a strong cycling programme announced for Glasgow 2026, with greater Para sport integration than ever before.”
The Commonwealth Games started in 1930s, but got the name ‘Commonwealth Games’ in 1978.
