Many Republicans are starting to feel that their party has become too extreme about its policies. For example, some Republicans felt a bit uncomfortable when Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene claimed that heterosexual people will disappear and called some educators “trans terrorists.” In addition, Republican Matt Gaetz called abortion rights activists ugly by saying, “Nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb.”
“I feel we’re on this sort of seesaw where one party sort of gets the upper hand on social-cultural issues, then they overplay that hand,” said Christine Matthews, a moderate Virginia Republican and longtime strategist for GOP candidates. “Republicans have taken things too far.”
Many of these uncompromising opinions have begun to make the Republican party more and more out of sync with the common people. This has resulted in a cultural battle inside the USA between different political parties as the Republican party goes farther and farther on the more extreme side. In addition, their views, like how some of them really hate gay and trans people, are very controversial.
“The vast majority of America … are not where the extreme sides are,” said Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who has the endorsement of major antiabortion groups and criticizes the stance of both Republicans and Democrats. “They want guardrails, and they want to be reasonable about it and particularly compassionate to women who’ve been wronged.”
Due to the more compromising standing of the common American people, many Republicans are more reasonable and accepting on both sides of each topic. For example, some Republicans voted to pass guaranteed access to birth control. In addition, many Republicans are fighting to have exceptions in the abortion rights legislation to protect victims during incidences of rape or incest.
