In an animated movie, “The Wrong Trousers,” a pair of futuristic pants enables people to walk upside down on ceilings and walls. This sparked an idea for researchers in England. The began to develop “The Right Trousers,” which can help the disabled and the elderly move around, get up easier, and improve blood circulation.
Inspired by this idea, many material scientists, computer programmers, and fashion designers are working to advance robotic clothing at a rapid pace, making us closer to a reality of living with clothes that could help us in our daily lives and improve our health.
According to The Washington Post, “In June, researchers in Australia created robotic textile fibers, which can make fabric move automatically. Last year, scientists at MIT fabricated computer programmable threads and built fiber batteries.”
Researchers say that they will soon unlock a new era where clothes can act like computers and tell the fabric what to do. Smart clothing can even be connected to your cellphone.
At the University of New South Wales in Australia, researchers are taking the next step to develop shapeshifting clothing. According to Than Nho Do, a senior lecturer at the school, “his team has created tiny silicon tubes, similar to the size of yarn and inspired by muscle fibers, that can weave into sheets of fabric.”
However, there are still challenges for Do’s team. They need to make the tubes notably smaller to easily blend in with the yarn.
With these new breakthroughs from researchers, your future closet could be replaced with smart clothing!
