Alex Smith, a former NFL quarterback, revealed that his daughter is recovering following brain surgery to remove a very rare tumor. He complimented his daughter’s sweetness, selflessness, humor, and intelligence.
Smith announced on Instagram that Sloane, the youngest of his three children and his only daughter, was first diagnosed with stroke-like symptoms. In fact, she had a large brain tumor that required an emergency craniotomy.
Smith said that waiting through the ten hours of surgery at Stanford Children’s Health Hospital was “the most excruciating time of our lives.” While neurosurgeons removed all of the tumor, the uncommonness of Sloane’s tumor means there is no treatment that is guaranteed to be permanent.
Sloan is now back to her usual six-year-old self, singing, dancing, laughing, and being strong. Smith thanks the “great medical staff, family, friends, acquaintances, and even those strangers” who have impacted their lives.
“By far, this has been the most difficult moment we have ever experienced,” he said. “Although we still have a long way to go, without all of you, we would not have made it this far.”
Alex Smith and his wife, Elizabeth Smith, were very open about Alex’s recovery from the injured leg that caused a change in NFL career. He wrote, “We’re healing together as a family.”
