Whether it’s our favorite family recipes, burgers and hotdogs for July 4th, or a nice steak from a restaurant, humans have been consuming meat for a long, LONG, time now. But the problem is that only some people know and believe in climate change, and how we’re using up all our resources. The animals we eat for meat take up a lot of resources, too. So, should we eat meat or not?

Animals take up a lot of crops and water, which we could eat by ourselves, and if we did, we would save a ton of food and water. To prove this, research from Former NASA and Apple engineer Mark Rober has shown that a whole pool of water can make 20 burger patties, or 75 loaves of bread and 30 jars of peanut butter. A peanut butter sandwich has the same number of calories and protein as a burger patty, 280 calories, and 20g of protein. The sandwiches could last you a little over a year, and the patties could last you a little over a week. Remember, this is the same amount of water used, the same number of calories, and the same amount of protein.

Not only that, but these animals take up a lot of space, too. About 20% of the world’s rainforests have been burned down to the ground for animals to live on, and all the CO2 that has been stored in the trees goes back to the atmosphere, making it so that climate change gets worse and worse. There is no second Earth, meaning we need to take care of our planet, and burning down forests doesn’t help.

With the latest technology, people are determined to not lose our planet. Impossible Foods, a company that makes meatless meat, is using plant material to make things such as burger patties. Another company, Beyond Meat, does the same thing, and scientists will soon be making lab meat.

The thing is humans were made to eat meat. If you think about it, our teeth are sharp enough to tear through meat, making us omnivores, not herbivores. Studies from an Oxford debate also prove that meat will help improve test scores and relieve stress. Studies have also shown that we gained our large brains when we started eating large quantities of meat. Not only that, but if we switch to lab meat, many people who raise animals for a living will lose their jobs.

Yes, it is proven that farming for meat is bad for the environment, but animals could do good for the environment. Sheep and other grazing, domesticated animals will eat grass from places that are not suitable to grow crops.

Some people believe we should eat meat, and some think we shouldn’t, but whether you want to eat meat or not is for you to decide.
