At least seven people were killed, and many people was injured during a Fourth of July parade, in downtown Highland Park, Illinois, during a shooting, the officials said.

The suspect has been charged with first-degree murder. He used a “high powered rifle” during the attack and might have planned the shooting for several weeks, police said.

Authorities have interacted with the suspect twice in 2019, and once, multiple knives were removed from his home.

The witnesses said, people ran away when they heard gunshots, not fireworks. Highland Park is about 25 miles north of Chicago.

Former classmates of the shooting suspect on Tuesday described him as a strange, soft-spoken kid who didn’t participate in class or school activities and showed no interest in engaging with his peers.

The few friends Robert “Bobby” Crimo III tended to be troublemakers, a couple of his former classmates said. “They wanted to be the ‘anti-‘ group, like the rebels,” Mackenzie said, a former classmate of the shooting suspect. “The aura they presented was opposite, negative and harsh.”

President Joe Biden is honoring the victims of the shooting in Highland Park, on Tuesday saying that flags should be lowered to half-staff on Saturday.

“I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, July 9, 2022,” said Biden in a statement.

The suspect was dressed in women’s clothing on Monday’s attack and investigators believe he did that to conceal his facial tattoos and his identity, according to Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli. Covelli said the suspect’s disguise helped him blend in with the people who were fleeing.

After the attack the suspect exited the roof and dropped his rifle to blend in with the crowd as he escaped, said Covelli. The suspect walked to his mother’s home and took her vehicle, according to the police.

Covelli said he wasn’t sure what the women’s clothing looked like but noted that it was reported the person had long hair so the suspect could have worn a wig.
