Just three days ago, in the capital of Norway, a 42-year-old rushed into a bar, killed two, and wounded 21 people. The 42-year-old was later accused of murder, attempted murder, and terrorist acts.

The gay bar targeted was only one of the man’s victims. The police don’t know if this was an attack specifically on gay people or on the broader local community. Because of the shooting, the Pride Parade got canceled. Nevertheless, many people still gathered in the streets shouting, “We’re here, we’re queer, we won’t disappear.”

To respond to this shooting, governments around the world including the US made public statements condemning this action. Since the government considered this attack a terrorist attack, they decided to raise terrorism threat assessment to the highest level. This means that the police will now start carrying around guns while on patrol.

The shooting rocked the whole community, but in the end, they took the shooting as a sign that they were right to be fighting for gay people. In fact, a memorial service was held for the shooting, and many people came including the Crown Princess Mette-Marit. When the NRK interviewed the shooter’s neighbor, she said that, “Our case is strengthened – not his.”
