About 28 miles off of the coast of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, Julian and Lincoln Barnwell found a 300-year-old shipwreck. This was not an average shipwreck. It was a shipwreck that had carried King James II of England, who was known as the Duke of York at the time.
The story of this shipwreck is a short and simple one. In 1682, The ship got into trouble when its pilot and King James II of England started arguing on what route to take. This led to the pilot taking a route that he was uncomfortable with, causing the ship to crash into some sandbanks.
In just one hour, the ship sank and about 200 people had drowned, due to the fact that nobody was allowed to get off before the duke, and he only left the ship at the last second. The pilot was blamed for the shipwreck. In fact, King James II wanted the pilot executed, but he was arrested and thrown in prison instead.
After a 4-year search across 5000 nautical miles in the open ocean, Julian, Lincoln, their father, and 2 other friends finally discovered the ship. “The first thing I spotted were large cannon laying on white sand. It was awe-inspiring and really beautiful,” said Lincoln Barnwell.
Many artifacts were found on the ship. Some examples include the ship’s bell, clothing, and bottles of wine — some left unopened. The reason for this large number of items being left on the ship is that everyone was hurried when they were evacuating the ship, and they were forced to leave their belongings behind. This information can help us understand more about life in the 17th century.
