Roughly 1.6 miles beneath the ocean surface, scientists saw many sets of holes along the ocean floor.

These strange holes were spotted by a crew of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Okeanos Explorer vessel as they researched and traveled along the Mid-Atlantic Ocean Ridge. The Mid-Atlantic Ocean Ridge is part of the world’s largest mountain range, and is for the most part, unexplored.

Scientists still haven’t found the origin or purpose for these holes, but they have encountered similar markings in other areas.

Now, with this mystery being made public, many are speculating about the holes’ origins. Some theories include that these holes could have come from cracks in the floor’s surface made by escaping gas, to underwater human craft digging for treasure, to ants, aliens and even starfish doing cartwheels.

On Facebook, NOAA researchers wrote, “While they look almost human made, the little piles of sediment around the holes make them seem like they were excavated by… something.”

There are already theories being proposed by scientists, including that heating and cooling of the seafloor across multiple volcanic eruptions created the strange path. Finding the origins however, might take some more time.
