Older Than Earth Space Rock Crashes Through House Roof
On June 26, a tiny part of a meteorite fell onto a house in McDonough, Georgia. It probably gave the owner a big scare, as it landed only 14 feet away from the owner. This meteor was burning bright enough to be seen in daylight, catching the attention of people across seven states.
The meteor created a sonic boom, which is a giant, explosive sound that happens when objects travel faster than the speed of sound, which is 767 mph. Scientists say that this meteorite may have been going at around 2237 mph. It cut through the wood, metal, insulation, and ceiling of the house, and then left a dent in the floor.
Planetary geologist Scott Harris, from the University of Georgia, studied this fragment. He found that this meteorite came from the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. Harris also discovered that this meteorite is a Chondrite, a type of meteor that was formed around the time the Solar System was being created. This meteor will probably be called the McDonough meteor, after the place it landed in.
This meteorite is around 4.56 billion years old, about 20 million years older than Earth, which is 4.54 billion years old.
