The Best Space Element
What is your favorite element in space? Is it planets? Is it stars? My favorite is the black hole. Black holes are able to suck in light.
First, what are black holes? They are dying stars that collapsed, and their gravitational pull grabs everything in. On September 9th, two black holes were spotted. They were growing closer and closer to one another. When will they collide? “Nasa believes this could happen in around 100 million years, ‘rattling the fabric of space and time as gravitational waves’, ” says the BBC. This proves that black holes can be dangerous.
Black holes have a ring of gas around them, and they are… well… black holes. They are interesting because time can slow down when you are nearing a black hole. “According to Nasa, if an astronaut travelled to a black hole on a 6-hour round trip, escaping before they hit the point of no return, they would return to their main ship 36 minutes younger than their crewmates,” the BBC reports. It’s crazy!
Some scientists suggest that we could be living inside a black hole. “One theory posits that the Big Bang was first the singularity of a black hole in a larger parent universe,” Live Science says. A singularity of a black hole is a place in the black hole that is infinitely small and with infinite density. The other part of a black hole is the event horizon, the “place of no return.”
Did you know: You can hear black holes! Astronomers figured out that black holes release pressure waves, and researchers turned them into musical notes. Since it was too low for humans to hear, they lifted up the volume. Black holes can be scary, but they can also be a music player.
Now you know about black holes. They are creepy, awesome, and interesting in many ways.
