Endangered Dormice

The Hazel dormice are endangered species that are mostly found in the UK. This mouse-sounding creature is not actually a mice or a mouse. Well, you see, the Hazel Dormice is actually a Glinide, while mice are in the family Muridae. The dormice are a small mouse-like appearance, large eyes, round ears, and a fuzzy tail.
In the 2000s, the Hazel dormice rapidly decreased in numbers by 70% and are now extinct in 17 countries around the world. The loss is due to habitat destruction, and ancient woodland, which are the more survivable habitats for the dormice, caused the population decline. Climate changes can also impact the dormice because UK’s maritime climate, with its warmer winter than what is usual, this can disrupt hibernation and breeding times.
People have now set up National dormouse monitoring Programs’ (NDMP), which is a monitoring program that tracks dormouse populations. Also they set up a habitat management, which includes tree planting, and removing elements that could potentially harm the dormice.
The big question everyone asks is why are Hazel dormice are important? First, the Hazel dormice are loved and recognized in the natural habitats within the UK. Secondly, they can improve other woodland species and many ecosystems. Lastly, dormice populations are important to environmental changes, making them a good maker of woodland health,
You can help these fuzzy mouse-like creature not go extinct by supporting organizations and while relying on donations and volunteer to work. Also, protect and restore woodlands. Finally, if you see a dormice or signs of them (nest), report it to the NDMP.
