Right now, the UK is experiencing a massive heat wave. Schools have taken many extra precautions to make sure their students are safe.

The Met Office (the UK weather office) has issued a warning saying that part of England on July 8 and July 19 will be experiencing “extreme heat”. This was the first ever red extreme heat warning. This week, the temperature is expected to go to 104° Fahrenheit (40° C) top.

The most drastic change to some schools is they are partially closed or fully closed. The Hereford Academy is changing their school time to avoid having school on the hottest time of the day. West Yorkshire decided to leave school altogether and use the nearby church for a cooler environment.

Many schools are canceling most of their sports days, because exercising will put even more stress on the body. The Department of Health and Social Care has recommended for students to not do any vigorous activities on these hot days.

Schools have also canceled PE time. A nine-year-old student named Evie reported that PE lessons at her school had been canceled. She exclaimed playtime to be “a bit boring, but I understand that if we run, we will get really tired and hot and sweaty.

Students are wearing the PE kits to keep cool, since they are generally cooler than normal clothes. The same schools have also been reducing the amount of time the students spend outdoors.

One student reported to Newsround, “At school we’ve had movie time in the shade during breaks, had ice lollies, the teachers have misted us with water and we’ve hydrated.”
