What are Saesangs? Saesangs are “fans” that stalk (mostly Korean, Chinese, and Japanese) artists’ lives. These “fans” know where “their” idol is every single second. Even scarier, these people even make group chats to stalk idols. Some people even have items of their idol’s clothing like underwear or socks. What’s more crazy is that even though Korea and Japan has outlawed this behavior, people still continue this kind of disgusting activity.

These delusional fans are normally teenagers who watch too much K-drama, and genuinely believe that their idol is expressing love to them when they say “I love you” in a film. They even go to the extent of dropping out of classes, or even school, to buy personal info about their idol. In 2019 a K-pop artist from Hong Kong, Jackson Wang, got his home address leaked by a saesang. One day he spotted her while being escorted into his van. He confronted her asking, in Chinese “You’re the one that leaked my address right?” The girl replied innocently, “Who? Me? I didn’t?” She later posted the video of the confrontation on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.

Another case happened in 2014 to D.O., a former member of the band EXO. This time, the saesang claimed they were selling D.O.’s undergarments online. The “fan” wrote “You can check the DNA on it. I also have his socks.” They even had the guts to say “Don’t criticize or attack me.”

Once, a teenage girl tried to forcefully kiss Suga, a member from the group BTS. Fortunately, she failed to, and was dragged away by security. She even called the security guard crazy.

These people might just have the biggest egos and most courage in the world. They “express their love” to an extreme extent. They take advantage of policies not set by the artist’s company, and give them gifts during fan signings. But some of those gifts aren’t just any ordinary gift, they are actually tracking devices. These crazy people implant miniature cameras in gifts for their idol to stalk them. Some idols want to express their love for their fans by putting gifts from their fans in their bedroom. By doing so, this allows saesangs to stare at their idols when they’re sleeping, and sometimes even catch a glimpse of their idols undressed. This is outright disgusting, and horrifying. Other times saesangs will even break into their idols house or hotel and hide under their bed, just to look at their idol. They also have ways to find out the addresses and phone numbers of artists. Some “fans” bribe people close to their idol with money to buy personal information or belongings. A member of the Korean girl group SNSD was almost kidnapped on stage in front of millions of fans. The man literally grabbed Taeyon by the waist and dragged her off stage. In the end, security guards got hold of the man and Taeyon was freed.

These are just a tiny snippet of saesang incidents.. These people are probably still going around and tracking where their idols are right now, even though it’s illegal.
