Russian Flyers goalie prospect Ivan Fedotov was reported to have been detained by Russia and forced to enlist in the Russian army on Friday. He was briefly hospitalized before being shipped off to serve in a remote military base in northern Russia.

Starting Friday, Fedotov had suffered from gastritis due to the immense stress of being detained and forcibly enlisted into the Russian army, or so it was claimed by Alexei Ponomaryev, his lawyer. While he was in the hospital due to his gastritis, Ponomaryev and parents were all barred from visiting him

Young Russian men from ages 18 to 27 are required to complete one year of military service, no matter if they do so willingly or forced to, and evading military service can lead to a prison sentence and heavy fines. Such was the reason that 25 year old Ivan Fedotov was detained so he could be enlisted to the military.

Fedotov had signed with the Flyers, and being one of the world’s top goaltenders outside of the NHL, was expected to compete for one of their spots on the roster.

Not only did he help lead CSKA Moscow to the Gagarin Cup as KHL champion, he also played as Russia’s starting goalie at the Beijing Olympics in February, helping the team to earn a silver medal.

The Russian goaltender was also reportedly detained on the day that Brittney Griner’s trial was held on drug smuggling charges, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Both Griner’s supporters and US officials alike claim that Griner is unjustly detained with some Griner supporters even stating that she is being held as a political asset.
