On Friday, Ivan Fedotov, a 6-foot-7 goalie who played for the Russian Olympic Committee in the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, was detained. During the games, Russia’s team earned a silver medal. According to a few Russian media outlets, he was detained at the St. Petersburg hockey rink and sent to a remote military base on charges of trying to evade the mandatory 1-year military service. Ivan Fedotov signed with the Flyers and was supposed to attend a training camp to determine whether he would be on the roster.
In recent years, Russian Goalies have emerged as one of the most wanted players in the N.H.L. Due to stars like Andrei Vasilevskiy, Igor Shesterkin, and Sergei Bobrovsky, respectively of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Rangers, and Florida Panthers. Many teams are eager to find the next advanced Russian goalie; however, Fedotov’s detainment may be in the way of that hope.
Fedotov was born in Finland and grew up in Russia. Last year he played for CSKA Moscow, a team with a history of ties with the Russian army. It is considered a top team in the K.H.L, Russia’s premier hockey league. With Fedotov’s help, he was widely recognized as the best goalie in league with 2.00 goals against average, which helped CSKA Moscow win the Gagarin Cup.
“Ivan is a player we have followed closely and are very pleased with his development,” Fletcher said at the time. “He’s put a number of strong seasons together in the K.H.L., culminating this year when he captured an Olympic silver medal and a K.H.L. Championship.”
A spokesman for the National Hockey League said that the league was aware of the situation but would not comment further.
