A few Russian sports players have spoken against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. One of those players is 27-year-old Nadya Karpova.
Karpova plays soccer in Spain, and has played 24 times for the Russian women’s national team. She is the only one on that team who has spoken out.
Karpova is persistent about how she is against the war because almost every day she posts a counter-war message on her Instagram account.
Karpova says, “I can’t just look at this inhumanity and stay silent, I don’t know what would happen if I was in Russia, not in Spain, but I feel a special responsibility to speak out.”
Karpova knows that a new Russian law states that if she says something that the Russian authorities think is fake, she could serve 15 years in jail. When interviewed, Karpova is cautious with her words, but it isn’t because of Russian law. It’s because she is trying not to forget and leave out major details.
When asked about pro-war Russian propaganda, Karpova asked “What unique mission are you talking about? I don’t think that Russians are special. At the same time, I am not ashamed to be Russian, as Russia doesn’t mean the government and Vladimir Putin.”
