Due to the war with Ukraine, Russia is losing fighting men almost as fast as they can replenish them. In a desperate attempt to recruit more troops, Russia launched a mobilization on July 10, 2022.

It is estimated that, out of a force of 300,000, 25,000 Russians have died, along with tens of thousands more wounded. Kamil Galeev, an independent Russian analyst and former fellow at The Wilson Center in Washington said. “It is basically desperate to get more men using any means possible.” Many other analysts have raised the same questions about how long Russia can sustain its offensive in Ukraine without a mass mobilization. Igor Girkin, an analyst and critic of the Ukrainian strategy, has said that Russia won’t be able to conquer Ukraine without a general regrouping of Russia’s army.

Currently, Russia is attempting to attract more troops by offering large salaries. Many of those who volunteer for the army are paid $2000 to $6000 per month. This is a lot more than the average salary in Russia of 700 dollars per month. “Mostly, of course, it is a way of earning money,” said Sergei Krivenko, the director of the Citizen Army Law, a Russian human rights organization.

Efforts like this can allow Russia to keep battling for now, but the problem of dwindling fighters will only grow. Sure, the Russian army can keep getting more people to fight with, but those will keep dying, and so on and so forth until the entire Russian population is stripped of their lives. Russia won’t be able to solve the problem in a fundamental manner.

Even though the mobilization is so important, President Vladimir V. Putin unsteadied the mobilization effort from the beginning, meaning he refused to let Russian military start calling up reserve forces in order to win the more important future battles. The Kremlin has now been forced to try to piece together replacement battalions in other ways.

Many other countries that have had problems like Russia have collapsed in war. It looks like the same fate will come to Russia, and we all hope the war will end soon!
