Ivan Fedotov, an Olympic silver medalist hockey player who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers, was detained last week. He contributed to Russia’s silver medal finish in the previous Olympics and was furthering his sucess. Alarmingly, Fedotov was detained last week on charges of planning to evade military service.

Fedotov helped the CSKA Moscow compete at the league championship. He is widely recognized as the best goalie in the entire hockey league.

Fedotov played on the CSKA Moscow, an elite hockey team that has strong ties with the Russian army. It is one of the top club teams in the K.H.L which is Russia’s premier hockey league.

Due to his immense success, Chuck Fletcher, Philadelphia’s president of hockey operations, decided to draft him. Supporting his decision, Fletcher commented that “Ivan is a player we have followed closely and are very pleased with his development…He’s put a number of strong seasons together in the K.H.L., culminating this year when he captured an Olympic silver medal and a K.H.L. Championship.”

There are numerous elite Russian goalies in the United States’s National Hockey League in recent years, such as stars Andrei Vasilevskiy from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Igor Shesterkin of the Rangers, and Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers. Many National Hockey League teams are looking forward to the next great Russian goalie, however Fedotov’s detainment raises extreme concern on whether this may be possible in the future.

According to Russian news outlets, Fedotov was arrested last friday at a hockey rink in St. Petersburg. He was taken to an army enlistment office, since young men in Russia are required to serve one year in the military.

A spokesman for the National Hockey League stated that the league was aware of the situation, but did not comment further. Similarly, Fletcher stated that the Philadelphia Flyers are “aware of the reports and are investigating the situation.”

Not much is known about whether Fedotov will be able to compete in the upcoming hockey season, or whether he will be forced to complete one year in the military.
