Ivan Fedotov, a Russian hockey player who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers. He was detained in Russia because of charges that he planned to evade military service, according to Russian new outlets.
Ivan Fedotov is a 6 feet 7 goalie, who signed with the Flyers on May 7. He also played for the Russian Olympic Committee in this year’s Winter Games in Beijing, helping the team win a silver medal.
A spokesman for the National Hockey League said, “the league knew the situation but wouldn’t say anything else.”
Philadelphia’s President of hockey operations and general manager, Chuck Fletcher, he said in a statement, the Flyers “are aware of the reports and are investigating the situation.”
Apparently, Fedotov was detained on Friday, the same day basketball star Brittney Griner’s trial started in Russia. Griner has been held by Russians since February. She was detained at a Moscow airport for carrying vape cartridges bearing traces of hash oil in her luggage, according to Russian officials. Griner’s supporters say that the Russians are using her as a bargaining chip with the USA, which has supported Ukraine during Russian’s invasion.
Fedotov was born in Finland and grew up in Russia, last year, he was with CSKA Moscow, a team that has ties with the Russian army. It’s also one of the top club teams in the K.H.L.
According to Russian news outlets, Fedotov was arrested at a St. Petersburg hockey rink on Friday and was taken to an army enlistment office. Young Russian men need to complete on year of military service.
Stars like Andrei Vasilevskiy from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Igor Shesterkin from the Rangers, and Sergei Bobrovsky from the Florida Panthers, makes many N.H.L. teams eager to find a great Russian goalie. However, Fedotov’s detainment might raise concerns about the future of that.
This year, Fedotov helped CSKA Moscow to win the Gagarin Cup, and was widely recognized as the best goalie in the league.
“Ivan is a player we have followed closely and are very pleased with his development,” Fletcher once said, “He’s put a number of strong seasons together in the K.H.L., culminating this year when he captured an Olympic silver medal and a K.H.L. Championship.”
