Olympic goalie Ivan Fedotov has been detained by Russia on accusations of plans to evade the military service. The Russian hockey player had signed with the Philadelphia Flyers on May 7.

Because of his detainment, he will be unable to play as roster at his training camp this autumn.

The Flyers are aware of what happened and will remain patient.

Fedotov happened to be detained on July 1, the same day that Brittney Griner’s trial was held.

Griner, a WNBA star, has been held by Russia since February. She was stopped at a Moscow airport holding some luggage containing what Russians believed to be vape cartridges.

Fedotov, on the other hand, was arrested at a St. Petersburg hockey rink and taken to a military base to enlist in the army – young Russian men are supposed to serve the military service for at least one year.

Fedotov was born in Finland but spent most of his life in Russia. He joined the Russian professional ice hockey team CSKA Moscow last year, and in February, he participated in the Beijing Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal.

Many people noted this success in the Winter Olympics, including Chuck Fletcher, Philadelphia’s president of hockey operations, “Ivan is a player we have followed closely and are very pleased with his development,”

said Fletcher. “He’s put a number of strong seasons together in the K.H.L., culminating this year when he captured an Olympic silver medal and a K.H.L. Championship.”

Fedotov, meanwhile, is still at the remote military base he has been moved to.
