Everyone follows rules. The question is, do they always? Some people will follow rules in public, but in private, they’ll bend them as much as they want. Deborah Rhea Seehorn is an American actress and director. She has a very specific personality trait– she insists that she is a rule follower. She never sneaks food from a salad bar. She actually stands in the foot shaped stickers at the airport to social distance properly. She has a passion for following rules, and becomes enraged when someone cuts in line.

“I have an issue with people thinking they’re better than anyone else,” Seehorn said. “It makes my blood boil in a way that I think is a bit irrational.”

She draws a parallel between her passion and the character she plays in Better Call Saul, an American crime drama television series. Seehorn plays Kim Wexler, an Albuquerque lawyer, pro bono criminal defense attorney, and con artist. Kim is portrayed as a highly intelligent, dedicated, caring, formidable, and loyal woman. She has morals and has shown shock and disgust at Jimmy’s (the protagonist, an earnest, greedy lawyer and former con artist known as Saul Goodman) shortcut schemes and dirty tactics to achieve his goals. She becomes angry when his actions cause her to be punished and put her own career in jeopardy. However, over time, Kim’s ethics devolve and she often resorts to underhanded means and seems to prefer the unethical route.

Like Seehorn, Kim has a strong reaction toward people who flout the social contract. Seehorn has also acknowledged that, saying that “The problem is, Kim’s ideals aren’t off, But the way she’s going about them is.” Unlike Seehorn, Kim’s moral compass is skewed. She has good ideals, but her methods were not ethical. Seehorn never strays from her ideals and always follows the rules.

“If we had not cast Rhea Seehorn in this role,” Gould said, “we would be talking about a very different show right now.”
