Republicans in Congress defeated a bill last month that would have protected the right to travel state borders for abortions, arguing that it would force religious groups to violate their beliefs and values, and enable the use of abortion-inducing medications.

The Texas attorney general is eager to defend the state’s now-defunct anti-sodomy legislation. This was upheld by the United States Supreme Court in Lawrence v. Texas, which prohibited homosexual intercourse. Despite falling two positions out of line with popular opinion and substantial public support for the law, an Arizona GOP (Grand Old Party or Republican) Senate candidate advocated for a countrywide abortion ban.

Some of the Republican party’s most outspoken members traffic in extreme and provoking expression from Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia claims that heterosexual people would vanish while condemning “trans terrorist” educators, and Republican Matt Gaetz of Florida calls abortion rights demonstrators unattractive, quoting “Nobody wants to impregnate you if you look like a thumb.”

After moving too far away from popular opinion, the present Republican party has projected new hostility toward gay people and potentially made hostile ties to women voters in high-stakes elections.

“I feel we’re on this sort of seesaw where one party sort of gets the upper hand on social-cultural issues, then they overplay that hand” moderate Virginia Republican and long-time strategist for the GOP candidates Christine Matthews stated. “Republicans have taken things too far.”

She also asserted that Republican actions are feeding Democratic claims that Republicans “want to return our society back to the 1950s,” a time in American history when women were urged to abandon the job and embrace their responsibilities as wives and mothers, among other injustices. Also reacting harshly after reading one antiabortion advocate’s comments that a 10-year-old rape victim would have to give birth under model legislation.

Other Republicans label Democrats as extremists for opposing abortion limits later in pregnancy. They also claim that their opponents are instilling fear that the Supreme Court’s decision will pave the way for the erosion of other liberties, to divert attention away from the economic issues that are certain to dominate the election.

“It’s not a winning issue for us,” GOP Strategist John Thomas of California said of abortion. “But on the other hand, our job is to meet the electorate where they’re at. And right now, they care about inflation, they care about gas prices, the economy.”
