JULY 31, 2022—A rare 170-carat pink diamond was found at the Lulo mine in Angola. The gem has been named the Lulo Rose.
“This record and spectacular pink diamond recovered from Lulo continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage,” said Diamantino Azevedo, Angola’s minister of mineral resources.
This is a big discovery because pink diamonds are really rare. Jewelry expert Joanna Hardy said she can’t be sure how much this diamond will sell for until it is cut into shape.
We can guess that it is going to sell for a lot, though, since diamonds like this one have sold for millions of dollars. In 2017, another diamond, the Pink Star, sold for $71.2 million in Hong Kong.
Have you ever wondered how diamonds like the Lulo Rose form? Well, it’s a complicated story. Diamonds are minerals made of carbon that form 100 miles below the surface of the earth. Carbon deposits sit down there under extreme heat and pressure, which molds them into diamonds. It can take millions of years for the diamonds to form.
But if diamonds form so deep in the earth, how do we get them? Well, that is thanks to volcanic eruptions that forced the diamonds closer to the surface of the earth. That is where they sit, all the way until now.
Now that we’ve covered how diamonds form, you may be wondering why these diamonds have colors. Most of the time, if diamonds are natural, they are colored by chemical elements while they are forming. Blue diamonds, for example, get their color from boron, while yellow diamonds get their color from nitrogen. Scientists aren’t sure which element gives pink diamonds their color.
