With the overturning of Roe v Wade on June 24, 2022, Democrats all throughout the United States have been taking initiative from the Supreme Court decision to lead the angry pro-choice supporters into the ballot box.
This movement has been supported by current President of the United States, Joe Biden, who has declared that “Roe is on the ballot.”
Additionally, President Biden has been urging voters to elect pro-choice individuals so abortion will not be outlawed at the state level. Democrats are still fighting for what they view as their constitutional rights. While most Republicans have praised the ruling, some Republicans are not in favor of the decision due to financial struggles of Americans.
In Pennsylvania, Republican Senate nominee Mehmet Oz states, “As we lift up life, we must focus on the needs of mothers and children, for whom this decision can be the greatest gift of all.”
According to the New York Times, “More than a dozen states have trigger laws that automatically ban most abortions and more could ban the procedure soon due to previously blocked laws that could take effect.”
Georgia is an example of a state that has a trigger law, and while Ohio does not have a specific trigger law to automatically ban abortions, it had a 2019 state law that banned abortions after six weeks.
Tim Ryan, the Democratic Senate nominee in Ohio, has said that the issue will be important in his campaign. When referring to the Roe v Wade decision, Ryan states, “This is insanity. Ohio has traditionally been a centrist state. This level of extremism is not going to play in Ohio.”
Meanwhile, in Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, called for the state court to rule in the pro-choice favor of the status of a 1931 law regarding abortion. Kris Mayes, a Democrat running for Attorney General in Arizona, has said, regarding abortion rights, “This will be the number one issue in my campaign.”
Republican strategists, however, have predicted that the outcomes of the elections have not been significantly swayed. Representative Ted Budd, North Carolina’s Republican Senate nominee, states, “The Court’s ruling correctly empowers the people’s representatives in each state to decide how best to protect unborn lives.” Other Republicans have stated that another focus would be to alleviate the financial burden these mothers will receive.
With such a controversial decision, the pro-choice and pro-life viewers fight through the ballot for the lives of these futrue American children and the lives of the Americans who will possibly become mothers with a large burden to bear all over the United States.
